The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team has been dealt a significant blow as starting quarterback Tyler Buchner has entered the transfer portal. Buchner’s decision to transfer comes as a bit of a surprise, given that he was seen as the future of the program after highly-touted QB Ian Book graduated.

Buchner did see some action this past season, appearing in six games and completing 8-of-13 passes for 111 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, it was clear that Book was the starting QB and Buchner was seen as the backup.

Despite this setback, Irish fans can take solace in the fact that there may be a possibility that Book could return to the program. Book has not yet declared for the NFL Draft and has left the door open for a potential return to Notre Dame.

If Book were to return, he would be the clear-cut starter and likely have a great season in a continued effort to raise his draft stock. Buchner’s departure could open the door for Book to not only have a great season statistically, but also in terms of leadership and team development.

With the transfer portal now a popular destination for quarterbacks with limited playing time, Notre Dame will likely have to search for a new backup. But with the potential return of Ian Book, the Irish could find themselves in a much better position come this fall.

It’s worth noting that the transfer portal has been used increasingly more by players at all levels of college football. It seems as though the trend is favoring the athlete more, as they are given more flexibility in their ability to change teams and play for a school that better fits their needs and desires.

While Notre Dame fans will certainly miss Buchner, they can hold out hope that Ian Book will return to the fold and lead the Irish to another successful season. Only time will tell what the future holds, but Irish fans can rest assured that their team will still be a force to be reckoned with come next season.
